ORP คือชนิดของดัชนีที่แสดงถึงระดับความสามารถในการเกิดออกซิเดชันและการเกิดรีดักชัน หากความสามารถในการรีดักชัน (ต้านอนุมูลอิสระ) มีค่าสูง จะให้ค่า ORP ลดลง (เป็นลบ) แต่หากความสามารถในการออกซิเดชันมีค่าสูง จะให้ค่า ORP สูงขึ้น (เป็นบวก) โดยทั่วไปแล้ว ORP จะวัดในหน่วยมิลลิโวลต์ (mV)
